¡Qué esfuerzo!	The strain of it!
¡Qué esfuerzo del caballo por ser perro!	Horse would be dog,
¡Qué esfuerzo del perro por ser golondrina!	dog would be swallow,
¡Qué esfuerzo de la golondrina por ser abeja!	swallow, a wasp,
¡Qué esfuerzo de la abeja por ser caballo!	wasp would be horse!
Y el caballo,	And the horse--
¡qué flecha aguda exprime de la rosa!	how deadly an arrow it wrings from the rose!
¡qué rosa gris levanta de su belfo!	how wanly the rose rises out of his underlip!
Y la rosa,	And the rose--
¡qué rebaño de luces y alaridos	what a concourse of lights and alarms
ata en el vivo azúcar de su tronco!	bound in the hurrying sweets of its stem!
Y el azúcar,	And the sugar--
¡qué puñalitos sueña en su vigilia!	what little stilettoes it dreams in its vigils!
Y los puñales diminutos,	And the little stilettoes--
¡qué luna sin establos!, ¡qué desnudos,	what mangerless moons they seek out! what nudes
piel eterna y rubor, andan buscando!	of flushed, indestructible flesh!
Y yo, por los aleros,	And I, on the eaves,
¡qué serafín de llamas busco y soy!	who strain to be fiery seraph, and am--
Pero el arco de yeso,	while the plaster pendentive,
¡qué grande, qué invisible, qué diminuto,	so invisible, vast, and so small--
sin esfuerzo!	strains not at all!
